Restoring Hope: TRU’s Holistic Approach to Education, Healing, and Family Reunification

Healing Hearts. Restoring Families. Empowering Futures.

TRU International provides continuous education and vocational training to underprivileged youth, with the ultimate goal of transforming their lives. Currently, the organization supports 18 young individuals through various educational and skills-based programs. A core objective of TRU’s work is reuniting these children with loving family members—whether parents, grandparents, or other relatives. In collaboration with external partners, TRU also offers psychological counseling and substance abuse support, focusing on healing from addiction and addressing deep-rooted trauma. Once foundational healing begins, TRU helps each youth determine their next steps—whether reintegrating into the school system to earn a diploma or pursuing vocational training to gain practical, employable skills.

Antony

Antony Kamweru

Former street boy and TRU’s first graduate, Antony now coaches football and mentors youth at TRU.

Antony’s life changed drastically at age ten when his father abandoned the family, forcing him to survive alone on the streets of Nairobi. He formed bonds with other street boys, begging and recycling to get by, but soon turned to glue addiction to escape hunger and pain. Vulnerable and lost, Antony began attending TRU Bible studies. Though hesitant at first, he embraced the opportunity for change. With guidance from John and Tyler, he committed to sobriety and joined TRU’s 4-step discipleship program. Through mentorship, faith, and practical support, Antony regained his self-worth and pursued vocational training in plumbing and welding. Now a football coach with TRU International, he actively mentors street youth, sharing hope and reflecting the powerful transformation Christ has brought to his life.

Sarah, a single mother of two young children, regularly attends the Monday TRU street girl program at the drop-in center. Known for her soft voice and gentle spirit, Sarah eventually opened up about her struggles—revealing that she resorted to prostitution in a nearby slum just to feed her children. Tired and desperate for change, she expressed a desire to find a better path. Encouraged by the TRU team, Sarah began exploring alternative ways to earn a living. Inspired and determined, she decided to start selling peanuts. TRU supported her first steps toward independence by helping her purchase her initial stock and materials. Sarah’s story reflects the hope and transformation TRU seeks to bring to street-connected women longing for a fresh start.

Joseph

Three-year-old Joseph regularly visits the TRU Drop-In Center on Mondays, drawn by the children’s program and a strong appetite. Despite his young age, his street-smarts and maturity stood out, raising concern among the TRU team. It was soon discovered that Joseph was left unsupervised during the day—his father worked, and his mother was unknown. After persistent efforts, TRU located his mother, Rose, who attends the street girls’ Bible study. However, Rose shows little to no interaction with Joseph at the center, a troubling sign that he may be at risk of becoming a permanent street child. Joseph’s situation highlights a painful reality shared by many children TRU encounters—one that calls for urgent prayer, support, and long-term intervention.

Ten-year-old Milan began attending TRU’s Monday Bible study for street girls on her own, without her mother. During one session, a former street child—now a TRU volunteer—noticed a scaly rash on her arms. Concerned, TRU staff took Milan to a clinic, where she was diagnosed with severe eczema and began treatment that led to significant improvement. Milan had previously been sent home from school due to the visible condition, which was misunderstood by her teacher. Although she is now cleared to return, her mother cannot afford a school uniform. TRU is working to provide one so she can resume her education. Milan has already spent several months out of school and occasionally wanders the streets in the evening, increasing her vulnerability.
